the man in the box gets me every time it’s a jungle out there you’re better off inside avoid the rain the man in the box has it all worked out dim all your lights and have a look what we’ve got lined up just for you let me hear your voice let me hear your voice can you hear all the noise in the jungle out there the face in the mirror gets me every time you look so alike but you may never be mine not on this side the eyes in the mirror are looking right through me the line goes dead as the picture fades and I have no reply let me hear your voice let me hear your voice can you hear all the noise in the jungle out there I know how to cut this trail tell a hotel from a jail I know how to fill my lungs together with everyone we run in the jungle out there let me hear your voice let me hear your voice can you hear all the noise in the jungle out there let me hear your voice let me hear your voice it’s a jungle out there

Disappear 03:17
Can I rest my wings in your neighbourhood I’m a traveled man and well misunderstood While the kids arrange little piles of dirt Can I leave you boxes of unrequited words Sleep away daylight in all its splendid greed Slip into night time and prowling the streets Why don’t you come with me out to the rocky beach I saw a stranded whale there disappear I’m a piece of art ascending without sound Can you keep me real can you tie me to the ground When the pistol goes I’m flying with the birds Drowning all your sorrows in unrequited words Sleep away daylight in all its splendid greed Slip into night time and prowling the streets Why don’t you come with me out to the rocky beach I saw a stranded whale there disappear Daylight Sleep away daylight Why don’t you come with me out to the rocky beach I saw a stranded whale there Sleep away daylight in all its splendid greed Slip into night time and prowling the streets Why don’t you come with me out to the rocky beach I saw a stranded whale there disappear disappear

This is their beautiful house and it makes them really proud if they only had time to sit down and drink some wine and he opens the fridge and it is empty and she sits by the fire and it is cold and he looks out the window feeling sorry for the architecture of their world life will never let you off it will never let you off Why won’t you take it from me? Is it not good enough? Why won’t you take it from me? Is it not love? This is their beautiful home no they don’t believe in garden gnomes but of course you just need one or two for the children and this shopping bag seems rather heavy but that’s just such a small price to pay yeah they consider themselves really lucky there are always enough things to do life will never let you off it will never let you off Why won’t you take it from me? Am I not worthy enough? Why won’t you take it from me? Is pity all you have? she's given it everything but it looks like you’re not ready she's given it one hundred percent but it looks like you’re just not ready for suburban heaven for suburban heaven (life will never let you off)

Antidote 02:40
this is one of the saddest stories I have ever known saddest thing about this story is that it is my own I am working over time on my undersized granite gravestone all alone this is one of the saddest movies that I have ever seen the saddest thing about the movie is it will never screen a figment of my imagination mixed with a dose of self-flagellation and irritation perhaps the main character is acting out of character and perhaps the towers of babylon were never meant to last all that long this is one of the saddest songs I ever wrote the sadness trickles down from the stem of every note tomorrow I will look like a selfish idiot and quickly write the antidote the antidote

there's a sound by the door and a face that I haven't seen for a long long time you’ve been out in the cold wondering why the lights went out such a long long time throw a log on the fire and let the heat devour us for a long long time personalities and all their possibilities flashing memories and fucked up opportunities opportunities we are aligned in space and time circling the sun on parallel lines you've always been with me in my days and in my dreams for a long long time in this moribund ship I've been caught up in your seas for a long long time personalities and all their possibilities flashing memories and fucked up opportunities opportunities we are aligned in space and time circling the sun on parallel lines we crash and burn we leave and we learn we never return

can you read the danger signs on the horizon the lunatic cowboys have gone for a ride across the border buildings are burning yet we all have alibis we’re all sanitized all desensitized an army of paraplegic observers with our bellies full and our empty hearts is this our fate or who done it is it all justified or who is to blame but it's all the same but it's all the same nothing will change nothing will change nothing will change in the script of a crisis it is all arranged we’re fully engaged we’re wasting moments by saving seconds we fear our future and regret our past is it our fate or who done it is this our punishment or will we get away at the end of the day it is all the same nothing will change nothing will change nothing will change in the script of a crisis it is all arranged we’re fully engaged is this our fate or who done it is it all justified or who is to blame nothing will change nothing will change nothing will change in the script of a crisis it is all arranged we’re fully engaged

Comfortable 03:00
naked beaten prisoners ever ready cameras casting pictures in my face bloodstains on my dinner plate it’s so comfortable in here as they storm the corridors bodies falling to the floor victim numbers escalate let’s cut to a commercial break it’s so comfortable in here want another beer just come and tell me twenty minute slice remote control me grab another gun and entertain me kill another man make it look easy watch the little faces smile with yellow fly-infested eyes millions squatting in the dirt chocolate crumbles on my shirt it’s so comfortable in here it’s so fucking comfortable in here want another beer just come and tell me twenty minute slice remote control me drop another bomb and entertain me kill another man make it look easy

I have buried a corpse in the ground It lies deep and may never be found I’ve forgotten who it is that I killed Have no memory of the deed itself Keep the picture of us in that funny frame In the dead of the night I went out Found a place where no-one was about My hands hurt from digging so fast When the soil swallowed up my past Keep the picture of us in that funny frame I kept silent, laid low for some time Carried the shame and avoided the light Couldn’t risk looking you in the eye Couldn’t break the shell though many times I tried Keep the picture of us in that funny frame Now they are building a road in that place There’s no telling of the dread I face When the bones stick out from the ground Will the perpetrator finally stand proud Keep the picture of us in that funny frame Because I will never be the same

My world is on fire I wound up a thief and a liar You lead the procession Proclaiming my decapitation I don’t know what has taken Hold of you I don’t – I don’t have a clue What has been hollowing you What were you thinking My world is on fire It’s coming right down to the wire To follow your writing Sometimes appears so inviting Should we meet among those ruins Just me and you Should I – should I have eschewed What has been hollowing you What was I thinking There’s no consolation In shutting down communication No negotiations We’re together in isolation What were we thinking We’re together in isolation

Staying up late I’m taking some time out Caught in a state with nowhere to sign off Tomorrow can wait I need to finish off What I began But then there’s this look on your face and I get tunnel vision Necessity assassinating me I cannot find a place to be safe from my indecision Reality alienating me Closing my eyes I can see pictures From out of the dark comes beautiful fiction Of being adrift in clouds of ill-conceived imagery But then there’s this look on your face and it’s all tunnel vision Intensity intoxicating me I cannot find a place to be safe from my indecision Anxiety annihilating me Tunnel vision Futility humiliating me It’s sucking me through the tube of my tunnel vision Proximity intoxicating me

Hero Parade 05:09
father - this is a bad dream mother – don’t make him angry children – lined up in the hallway listen – here come the war planes they come and go – this is just so we take the blow – the cancer grows so many lies spoken so many spines broken in the night so many times woken to watch the late night hero parade father – where is your buffer mother – to live is to suffer children – keep quiet about it people - they always gossip it comes in waves like wind on graves beneath the skin the cancer wins so many lies spoken so many spines broken in the night so many times woken to watch the late night hero parade what’s bothering me solid doors and jangling keys cannot concentrate too many damaged heroes of late what’s wrong with me solid doors and jangling keys why am I afraid of limping cripples in the hero parade father – the world war is over

Phoenix 04:43
Even when all the light is gone I can still watch the setting sun And I will Even when all my strength is gone I can still fight for days to come And I will Even though I was left behind Cards I was dealt were not so kind Even though I was rendered blind What I was out for I could not find But I will Yeah I will

about

2009's third studio album proves that The Era won't go away, roots firmly planted in New Zealand's swampy indie pop paddock. You might as well get used to it. A little pacier than its predecessors, this offering is full of smart-ass lyrics packed into clipped melodies, grating guitars and colliding harmonies, swerving from alt-pop to post-punk and alt country to post-rock (and back). No recycled formulae or tired stereotypes here, just a blunt wallop of quirky originality with no regrets.

This download includes the 2011 single version of 'Parallel Lines' as a bonus track.

Thanks for using Bandcamp where all proceeds go directly to the band, not to a dodgy label or the RIAA.
